From the outside The Bull Inn at Barton Mills is a historic and traditional coaching inn steeped in history, inside however is a different story, although sympathetic to the original features The Bull Inn now has a funky, modern and contempory feel to it. The original stripped oak beams nestle against the designer wallpaper and the handmade furnishings covered in amazing fabrics go perfectly with the reclaimed floorboards. We bought The Bull Inn in May 2007 and have since been transforming it into what you see today - a boutique hotel with a funky and modern feel.
The difference between a "standard boutique" hotel and us is that we own The Bull Inn, we manage The Bull Inn and we love The Bull Inn. Now would be a good time to let you in on "us"....
Cheryl is the drive, focus and ambition behind The Bull Inn, she is constantly striving for new ideas, concepts and goals. Everything you see around you at The Bull Inn is also down to Cheryl's tireless hours of searching and sleepless nights in order to make everything look funky and boutique yet sympathetic to the history of the building.
Wayne is always seen around the building as a "jack of all trades" and in this case master of them all! Some new skills on his list are plumbing, carpentry & electrics - of an evening you will find Wayne behind the bar serving the great bunch of locals and new customers alike. He is a bit of a dark horse though as he has been known to dance on the tables when the time is right - so don’t be surprised if you are asked to move your drinks to one side when Madness comes on ;-)
Sonia is Cheryl's sister and someone who you will normally find in the award winning restaurant or bar. Sonia injects the enthusiasm, motivation and party into The Bull Inn and is not shy of being centre of attention. The team revolve around Sonia, she is the one who will know when you come in, what you drink and what your favourite meal is.
Smiffy is essential to the personality of The Bull Inn, there are not many "boutique hotels" that have an in house Santa, Oompah Loompah, Morph and Robin all at their disposal - intrigued? You should be…..
The History of The Bull Inn
The Bull Inn is a fascinating building, rich in history. The 16th century coaching inn of The Bull Inn was an important staging post on the route from Norwich to London.
The Bull Inn is over 500 years old and simply oozes with character. In its rambling aspect, its quaint gables and dormer windows, its picturesque courtyard and stagecoach archway, it is reminiscent of the past.
Like the Maypole, most famous of the inns of Dickens, the building can boast its legend of Queen Elizabeth I - a legend which narrates how the Virgin monarch slept there one night in the days when her Earl of Leicester romance was in full flower.
